The Bhagavad Gita teaches us to release hatred, but it also asks us to act with clarity and discernment.

If someone keeps hurting you, the real question may not be about whether to forgive them but about what the wise next step is.

Read the full article to discover when forgiveness heals, when boundaries become necessary, and what Vedic scriptures say about walking away with peace.

To Forgive or Not?

You forgive them. They apologise. For a while, things seem better. Then it happens again.

Perhaps it is a partner who keeps breaking your trust. A parent whose words leave you feeling small. A sibling who crosses the same boundary after every conversation. A friend who hurts you, apologises sincerely and then repeats exactly the same behaviour.

Eventually, a difficult question arises:

Should you keep forgiving someone who keeps hurting you?

For a spiritual person, this question can become especially complicated. We are taught that forgiveness is a virtue. Vedic philosophy speaks highly of compassion, patience and kṣamā, or forgiveness and forbearance. The Bhagavad Gita asks us to rise beyond hatred. Saints teach us to let go of resentment.

So when someone repeatedly hurts us, we may feel that setting a boundary means we have failed spiritually but Vedic wisdom offers a different perspective:

Forgiveness, discernment, accountability and distance can all exist together:

You can release anger from your heart while becoming wiser about whom you trust.

You can wish someone well while restricting their access to your life.

You can feel compassion for someone’s weaknesses while refusing to participate in a pattern that repeatedly causes you harm.

The goal of forgiveness is inner freedom. The goal of dharma is right action.Sometimes the wisest response is to take both into account.

What Does Forgiveness Mean in Vedic Philosophy?

The Sanskrit word kṣamā includes patience, endurance, forgiveness and forbearance. It is considered a great spiritual quality because resentment has a cost.

When someone hurts us, the event may last a few minutes, but the mind can replay it for years. We remember what they said. We keep thinking about what we should have said. We rehearse future confrontations. We wonder how the person could have behaved that way. Slowly, the person who hurt us begins occupying space inside our consciousness.

This is the main reason that forgiveness is important. Forgiveness allows us to loosen the emotional grip of what happened. We can focus on the lesson we learned from the incident rather than let the incident take over our inner space.

The Vedic tradition values compassion but at the same time, it also values viveka, the ability to discern right from wrong with wisdom.

Wisdom helps us gain clarity. If a person’s behaviour consistently shows that they misuse our trust, wisdom helps us to recognise the pattern.

Compassion concerns what we hold in the heart while discernment concerns the choices we make. We need both.

Krishna’s Teaching on Forgiveness and Inner Freedom

In Chapter 12 of the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna describes qualities that are dear to Him.

Bhagavad Gita 12.13 begins:

“adveṣṭā sarva bhūtānāṁ maitraḥ karuṇa eva ca”

Krishna describes a person who is free from hatred toward living beings, friendly and compassionate, and who possesses equanimity and forgiveness. The verse can be studied through the IIT Kanpur Gita Supersite.

Notice the spiritual objective – Krishna is shaping the inner character of the seeker. A person living spiritually tries to avoid becoming consumed by hatred. This verse gives us an important principle for dealing with repeated pain:

You can refuse to accept someone’s behaviour while releasing hatred toward the person. These are two separate inner movements. Imagine someone repeatedly lies to you. Forgiveness may mean releasing the desire to punish them emotionally. Discernment may mean believing their future promises only after their actions demonstrate change. Compassion may mean recognising that their dishonesty comes from their own fears or weaknesses. Dharma may mean protecting yourself from the consequences of that dishonesty. All four can exist together.

Forgiveness and Reconciliation Are Different

One of the greatest sources of confusion around forgiveness comes from treating forgiveness and reconciliation as the same decision.

They are separate:

Forgiveness can happen within one person.

Reconciliation requires participation from two people.

Suppose someone betrays your trust. You may eventually release your anger toward them. That is an internal transformation. For the relationship to become close again, more is required:

There needs to be accountability.

There needs to be understanding.

There needs to be changed behaviour.

You need evidence to be able to trust them again. An apology can begin this process, but consistent action completes it.

This distinction matters enormously in families and relationships.

People sometimes say:

“I already apologised. Why are you still keeping your distance?” The answer may be simple. Forgiveness can happen today. Trust may take months or years to rebuild. The two follow different timelines.

For a deeper exploration of betrayal through Vedic teachings, read Betrayal and Forgiveness in Vedic Scriptures. It examines how Vedic wisdom approaches grief, boundaries, reflection and spiritual healing after trust has been broken.

The Bhagavad Gita Teaches Us Action With Clarity

The setting of the Bhagavad Gita itself gives us another important insight. Arjuna stands on the battlefield overwhelmed by sorrow and moral confusion. Krishna’s answer is a teaching on dharma, wisdom, action, devotion and the nature of the Self.

One of its most famous teachings appears in Bhagavad Gita 2.47:

“karmaṇy evādhikāras te mā phaleṣu kadācana”

The teaching directs Arjuna toward appropriate action while releasing attachment to outcomes. You can read the verse and several traditional commentaries on the IIT Kanpur Gita Supersite.

Applied to relationships, this could mean:

You control your response but cannot control whether another person changes.

You can communicate clearly.

You can establish a boundary.

You can behave with dignity.

You can offer another opportunity when wisdom supports it.

You can step away when repeated behaviour reveals a pattern.

You can release your attachment to forcing the other person to become the person you hoped they would become. That is how emotional freedom can begin.

The Ramayana Shows Us That Love and Distance Can Coexist

The story of Vibhishana in the Ramayana is a good example.

Vibhishana was Ravana’s brother but family loyalty did not prevent him from recognising Ravana’s adharma. He repeatedly counselled Ravana regarding Sita and urged him toward the righteous course. Ravana rejected this counsel. Eventually Vibhishana left Lanka and sought refuge with Shri Rama. The Valmiki Ramayana records Vibhishana joining Rama after recognising the difference between Rama’s qualities and Ravana’s conduct.

Consider what this means. Vibhishana did not need to hate Ravana in order to separate himself from Ravana’s choices. He needed clarity. There is an important lesson here for modern relationships:

Love for a person does not mean that you need to be loyal even when their harmful behaviour is harmful.

We sometimes stay trapped in painful relationships because we confuse love with proximity.

We may think any of the following:

“If I love this person, I must stay.”

“If I forgive them, everything must go back to how it was.”

“If I create distance, I am abandoning them.”

Vedic wisdom suggests that we ask what is the right thing to do in this situation. The answers could be different:

Sometimes dharma encourages reconciliation.

Sometimes dharma requires patience.

Sometimes dharma means an honest conversation.

Sometimes dharma requires firm boundaries.

And sometimes dharma leads us away from a relationship whose pattern continually damages our wellbeing.

If you are wrestling specifically with that decision, When to Leave a Toxic Relationship: Vedic Guidance explores how dharma and personal boundaries can guide the decision to stay, change the relationship or step away.

Why Do People Keep Hurting Us After We Forgive Them?

There are many possible reasons:

Some people genuinely regret what they did but they still have deeply ingrained habits they have struggled to change.

Some understand their behaviour only superficially.

Some confuse apology with transformation.

Some apologise because they fear losing the relationship.

Others may have learned that an apology restores their access to you, even when their behaviour hasn’t unchanged.

This is why your discernment matters. Yo must listen to apologies and observe patterns. Words reveal intention. Repeated actions reveal character, capacity and current level of self awareness.

A person may sincerely want to change and still lack the emotional maturity required to create change. You can have compassion for that struggle while making decisions based on the present reality.

If you recognise a recurring pattern in the kinds of relationships you enter, our article Why Do I Keep Choosing People Who Hurt Me? explores samskaras, attachment, karma, boundaries and the tendency to mistake emotional familiarity for compatibility.

Karma Does Not Mean You Must Keep Enduring Pain

Karma is another idea that can become misunderstood in painful relationships.

Someone may think: “Perhaps this is my karma. I should simply endure it.” But karma is to do with action and consequence. Your response is also an action. Your decision today contributes to what happens tomorrow.

If somebody repeatedly disrespects your boundaries and you continually let them get away with the consequence of crossing them, that response becomes part of the pattern.

If instead you calmly establish a consequence, that too becomes karma. The Vedic worldview places great importance on conscious action. Your spiritual responsibility is to make the wisest choice available to you now:

Sometimes that means giving someone another opportunity.

Sometimes it means changing the terms of the relationship.

Sometimes it means creating distance.

The question is less about what pain you are destined to endure and more about what you must learn through your present situation.

Perhaps the lesson is patience.

Perhaps it is courage.

Perhaps it is self respect.

Perhaps it is discernment.

Perhaps it is finally recognising a pattern that you have spent years hoping would change.

How Can You Tell When Forgiveness Needs a Boundary?

Instead of asking only, “Do I forgive them?” try asking a series of deeper questions:

Has the person taken genuine responsibility?
An apology accompanied by excuses is different from an apology accompanied by reflection and changed behaviour.

Is their behaviour changing over time?
Trust grows from consistency. Look at the pattern rather than the intensity of a single conversation.

Have I clearly communicated what hurts me?
Where communication remains unclear, clarity should come first.

What happens after I express a boundary?
A person’s response to your boundary can reveal much about the relationship.

Does this relationship repeatedly disturb my peace, dignity or sense of safety?
Your inner state contains useful information.

Am I staying because of love, wisdom and genuine possibility, or because of fear, guilt and attachment?
This question often reveals what the mind has chosen not to deal with.

What would dharma look like here?
Dharma asks for the action that supports truth, responsibility and wellbeing.

These questions move forgiveness from an emotional reaction into a conscious spiritual practice.

What If the Person Is Family?

This is where forgiveness becomes especially difficult. You can leave many relationships easily but family relationships come with history, obligation, affection, cultural expectations and shared responsibilities.

But even within family life, we must be discerning. A boundary does not always mean complete separation:

It might mean changing how often you communicate.

It might mean avoiding certain subjects.

It might mean refusing to participate in arguments.

It might mean meeting in shared family settings while reducing private interaction.

It might mean declining financial involvement.

It might mean calmly ending a conversation when disrespect begins.

The aim is to choose a boundary proportionate to the situation. We can create healthy boundaries without anger or drama. They can be quiet, respectful and firm.

How Do You Forgive Someone Without Letting Them Hurt You Again?

Begin by separating your inner healing from their future access to you.

You can say within yourself:

“I release my need to carry this anger every day,” and then reflect on what this experience has taught you.

Perhaps it taught you to communicate earlier.

Perhaps it revealed a boundary you need.

Perhaps it showed you that you were repeatedly believing promises while overlooking behaviour.

Perhaps it taught you to trust your intuition.

Perhaps it revealed your own fear of losing people.

Forgiveness becomes spiritually useful when you can turn your pain into wisdom. Otherwise, you may repeatedly revisit the same lesson.

When difficult conversations are still possible and appropriate, How We Should Respond to Conflict offers a Vedic approach to responding with awareness, clarity and dharma rather than emotional impulse.

A Simple Vedic Practice for Releasing Hurt

When resentment keeps coming back:

Sit quietly for a few minutes.

Bring the situation to mind.

Name what happened truthfully.

Avoid minimising it.

Then observe the emotions that arise.

Anger may appear.

Grief may appear.

Disappointment may appear.

Allow yourself to recognise them.

Then silently pray: “May I see this situation clearly. May anger become wisdom. May pain become strength. May I act according to dharma. May this experience help both of us move toward greater truth.”

Now ask yourself one final question: “What is the wisest action available to me now?”

This exercise changes our focus because we usually ask, “Why did they do this to me?”

And now we ask, “Given what has happened, how will I choose now?”

That is where your power lies.

So, Should You Forgive Someone Who Keeps Hurting You?

Yes, forgiveness can be a strong spiritual choice. But forgiveness does not have to mean restoring the relationship to its previous form.

You can forgive and create a boundary.

You can forgive and ask for accountability.

You can forgive and allow trust to rebuild slowly.

You can forgive and change the relationship.

You can forgive and walk a different path.

The main purpose of forgiveness is to prevent another person’s actions from governing your inner world. The real purpose of discernment is to prevent the same lesson from coming into your life again and again.

Krishna’s teachings bring these truths together beautifully:

Be compassionate.

Release hatred.

See clearly.

Perform the action that dharma requires.

Then release your attachment to controlling what another person chooses to do.

Perhaps the most mature form of forgiveness is this:

I release the bitterness of what you did, I accept the truth of what your actions have shown me and I will make my future choices with wisdom.

That is forgiveness with viveka. That is compassion with clarity. And sometimes, that is how pain finally becomes spiritual growth.

When You Need Guidance for Your Own Situation

Every relationship is different.

A teaching that applies to a friend may need to be understood differently when the person is a spouse, parent, sibling, colleague or adult child. The Vedic scriptures don’t reduce life to one rule because dharma depends upon context.

If someone keeps hurting you and you are struggling to decide whether to forgive, confront, create distance or give the relationship another chance, you can ask your question for free at www.myeternalguide.com.

Share what you are facing, and MyEternalGuide can help you explore the relevant Vedic wisdom for the choice in front of you.

Ancient wisdom becomes most valuable when it helps us make a better decision today.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1.
