Om Namah Shivaya — When You Need to Stop Fighting What Has Changed

The mantra: ॐ नमः शिवाय or Om Namaḥ Śivāya

A simple translation is: Om. Salutations to Shiva.

The Vedic source behind the familiar mantra appears in the Śrī Rudram of the Taittirīya Saṃhitā: namaḥ śivāya ca śivatarāya ca or “Salutations to the auspicious one and to the more auspicious.”

The phrase occurs in Taittirīya Saṃhitā 4.5.8. The familiar standalone form Om Namah Shivaya developed within the later Shaiva devotional tradition. You can read the Sanskrit passage in the Taittirīya Saṃhitā 4.5.8 here. Taittirīya Saṃhitā 4.5.8 — Vaidhika Dharma

Why this mantra can be meaningful after a heartbreak

Shiva is strongly associated with transformation, dissolution and the capacity to remain steady amid change. After a relationship ends, much of our suffering comes from arguing internally with a fact that has already occurred:

“This should not have happened.”

“They should have tried harder.”

“We were supposed to have more time.”

“They may still change their mind.”

Some of these thoughts may be understandable. Some may even point to real mistakes. But repeating them indefinitely cannot reverse what has already happened. Acceptance does not mean that the ending was fair. It means recognising that the relationship is over.

This makes Om Namah Shivaya useful as a practice of surrender – surrender of the exhausting attempt to mentally rewrite what has already taken place.

If you want to explore this principle beyond heartbreak, MEG’s article on Lord Shiva’s teachings for modern life looks more closely at transformation, detachment, discipline and mastery of the mind.

How to practise the manta after a breakup

Choose one moment when your mind predictably returns to the relationship. Perhaps it happens when you wake up, before sleeping, while commuting or after checking your phone.

Sit quietly and chant: Om Namah Shivaya slowly enough that you can hear each repetition. When thoughts about the relationship return, you do not need to fight them. Notice the thought. Then return to the mantra. The practice is returning to the mantra every time your mind wanders.

This reflects the principle in Bhagavad Gita 6.26: the wandering mind is repeatedly brought back under guidance. If your difficulty is specifically knowing when it is time to let go of a relationship, that question needs discernment in addition to chanting. MEG’s guide to recognising when it may be time to let go examines that decision more closely. How to Know When It’s Time to Let Go

A mantra can steady the mind while you make the decision; it should not make the decision for you.

2. The familiar name Mahamrityunjaya Mantra belongs to its later devotional reception. You can study the original Sanskrit, transliteration and translation of Ṛg Veda 7.59.12 here. Ṛg Veda 7.59.12 — VedaPath

A simple rendering of its central idea is: May I be released from the bondage of death as a ripe fruit naturally separates from its stem, without being separated from the deathless. The wording has important interpretive subtleties, so it is better not to reduce the mantra to a promise of “healing” or guaranteed protection.

What does this mantra have to do with heartbreak?

The Mahamrityunjaya Mantra is not originally a breakup mantra. It deals with a much wider topic. But the idea of release can speak powerfully to a person who is struggling with an ending. A relationship often creates thousands of small bonds:

You knew who you would message after work.

You knew who would sit beside you at dinner.

You had plans for next month or next year.

Perhaps your social life, routines, holidays and even your idea of your future included this person. When the relationship ends, the person is not the only thing that goes away. An entire structure around them changes. That is why heartbreak can feel disproportionate to one conversation. You are not only losing a person. You will also have to let go of expectations, habits, roles and a future you had already begun imagining.

The imagery in the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra gives us a useful modern reflection: Can something that once belonged to your life be released when its time has ended, without destroying what remains of you?

How to chant this mantra after a heartbreak

Use this mantra when the loss feels heavy rather than when you are simply annoyed, lonely or tempted to send a message.

Read the meaning first.

Then chant the verse slowly several times.

You do not need to force yourself to feel peaceful while chanting. Instead, bring one clear intention: “May I move through this loss without remaining bound to what is over.” This sentence is not part of the Sanskrit mantra. It is simply a way of clarifying why you are practising it.

3. Asato Ma Sad Gamaya — When You Need Clarity More Than Comfort

The prayer

असतो मा सद् गमय ।
तमसो मा ज्योतिर्गमय ।
मृत्योर्माऽमृतं गमय ॥

Asato mā sad gamaya
tamaso mā jyotir gamaya
mṛtyor mā amṛtaṃ gamaya

A simple translation is:

Lead me from the unreal to the real.
Lead me from darkness to light.
Lead me from death to the deathless.

These lines occur in Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upanishad 1.3.28. The Sanskrit text of the Upanishad is available through Sanskrit Documents. Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upanishad — Sanskrit Documents Again, this is not a prayer written specifically for heartbreak. Its importance after a relationship ends lies in the movement it asks for: from confusion toward what is real.

Heartbreak can make us remember selectively

After a breakup, the mind can become a skilled editor. It may replay the holiday but erase the memory of the constant arguments. It may remember the apology but forget that the same behaviour happened again. It may focus on the person’s best qualities while excluding the reasons the relationship became unsustainable. Or it may do the opposite. If you were badly hurt, the mind may reduce years of shared life to one betrayal and decide that nothing was ever genuine. Neither idealisation nor total condemnation necessarily gives us an accurate view.

This is where Asato Ma Sad Gamaya becomes especially relevant.

Ask:

What actually happened?

What am I imagining?

What do I know about this person’s behaviour rather than what I hope it means?

What part of this relationship am I mourning: the person, the companionship, the future I expected or the version of myself I was when we were together?

The prayer asks for movement toward reality:

Sometimes reality is: “I still love this person, but the relationship does not work.”

Sometimes it is: “I miss them, but I do not miss how I was treated.”

Sometimes it is: “I made mistakes that I need to learn from.”

And sometimes it is: “I do not yet understand why this ended, but I cannot make my life dependent on waiting for an explanation.”

A Mantra Should Not Become Another Way to Wait for Your Ex

This is one of the most important distinctions in mantra practice after heartbreak. You may begin chanting because you are in pain. But another hope can develop:

“If I chant sincerely enough, perhaps they will come back.”

“If I become more spiritual, perhaps they will realise I have changed.”

“If I complete a certain number of repetitions, perhaps the relationship will be restored.”

This thought process turns the mantra into another form of waiting. A mantra is better used to work with your own attention, intention and action. It cannot ethically become a tool for overriding another person’s choice. A relationship requires two people’s participation. Your spiritual practice belongs to you and their decision belongs to them.

If your real question is whether the relationship will still work out, the relevant issues are different: what happened, whether both people accept responsibility, whether trust can realistically be rebuilt and whether behaviour has changed.

If the relationship is still active and both people are trying to work through conflict, MEG’s guide to mantras for healing relationships and calming conflict addresses that different situation.

If repeated hurt is the real issue, MEG’s article on whether you should forgive someone who keeps hurting you explains the important difference between forgiveness, trust and reconciliation.

What to Do When You Want to Contact Them

Heartbreak often becomes most difficult in specific moments:

You see something they would have found funny.

You wake up after dreaming about them.

You notice that they viewed your social media.

You hear that they are seeing someone else.

Suddenly the desire to contact them flares up.

This is a good moment for mantra practice because you have a clear action to interrupt.

Before sending anything:

Chant your chosen mantra slowly for five minutes.

Put the phone somewhere you cannot reach it.

Ask, “What am I hoping this message will do?”

Ask, “Has anything materially changed since the last conversation?”

Decide whether the message still makes sense once the immediate urge has passed.

The purpose is not to create a rule that you must never contact an ex. Sometimes a conversation, apology or practical message is appropriate. The purpose is to make sure you are sending the message because it makes sense—not because five minutes of emotional intensity temporarily took control of your judgement.

If the ending was abrupt and you were left without answers, MEG’s guidance on what to do when someone cuts you off explains when one attempt at communication may be appropriate and when another person’s silence has to be respected.

What If You Were the One Who Ended the Relationship?

Heartbreak does not only happen to the person who was left. You may know that ending the relationship was necessary and still miss the person. You may feel guilty because they were deeply hurt.

You may wonder whether sadness means you made the wrong decision but missing someone and deciding not to continue a relationship are two different judgements. One concerns attachment and affection. The other concerns whether the relationship, as it actually existed, should continue.

This is another reason Asato Ma Sad Gamaya can be useful. It asks you to move toward what is real rather than toward whatever temporarily reduces discomfort.

Ask yourself: If nothing about the relationship changed, would I genuinely choose to go back?

If the answer is no, the sadness may need to be experienced without turning it into evidence that the decision was wrong. If the answer is genuinely uncertain, use the clarity you gain from practice to examine the decision carefully rather than rushing back simply to stop missing the person.

How Long Should You Chant a Mantra for Heartbreak?

There is no scriptural rule stating that heartbreak goes away after a fixed number of days or repetitions. A practical approach is to choose one mantra and use it consistently for a period rather than changing mantras every time your mood changes. Five or ten quiet minutes each morning or evening is enough to establish a practice.

You can also use the mantra when a predictable trigger occurs:

after seeing their name

before opening old messages

when imagining conversations that are not happening

when you are tempted to check what they are doing

Can a Mantra Make Heartbreak Go Away?

No mantra should be presented as a guarantee that emotional pain will go away. A meaningful relationship does leave impressions and memories. There may be practical consequences to deal with, mutual friends to navigate, possessions to return or conversations that still need to happen. The aim is to gain freedom in what you do with these situations when they arrive.

At first: You think about about your relationship, and the next hour disappears. Later: You think about it, notice what happened and continue with your day. Eventually: The memory of the person or relationship may still matter but does not direct your behaviour. You are now recognising that something can have mattered deeply and still be over.

A Simple 10-Minute Mantra Practice After a Breakup

Choose one mantra rather than combining several.

Spend the first minute sitting quietly.

For the next few minutes, chant slowly enough to hear yourself.

When memories interrupt, do not begin analysing them.

Return to the mantra.

After chanting, ask one question: “What does this situation require from me today?”

The answer may be:

Do not send the message.

Return their belongings.

Go to work.

Speak honestly to a friend.

Stop checking their account.

Apologise for something you genuinely did wrong.

Accept that no further conversation is currently available.

Take care of a responsibility you have neglected while thinking about the relationship.

A mantra becomes practically useful when greater inner steadiness changes your next action.

Heartbreak Changes When Your Focus Changes

The hardest part of heartbreak is that every time you think of the person another thought follows. One memory leads to another, one old photograph leads to twenty, one unanswered question becomes an hour of imagined explanations. A mantra interrupts that chain. The relationship may have ended without your consent and the memory may arise without your consent. But what you give your attention to is something you can gradually influence. This is why mantra practice after heartbreak is not primarily about forgetting someone but about gaining authority over your own mind.

When You Understand the Principle but Still Don’t Know What to Do

You may understand that you need to steady your mind and still not know what this particular relationship requires from you:

Should you contact them once more?

Apologise?

Give the relationship another chance?

Or finally accept that it has ended?

A general article cannot answer that without knowing what actually happened.

MyEternalGuide can help you examine your specific decision through relevant Vedic teachings, so you can decide what to do next with greater clarity rather than acting only from heartbreak.
